By Tim Kirsininkas, Attorney General
Hello delegates, and welcome to the 2019 Model Illinois Government Simulation!
My name is Tim Kirsininkas, your Attorney General for this year's simulation. As Attorney General, I am in charge of providing coverage and updates of the simulation's happenings through our daily student-run publication, the MIG Journal. My staff and I are committed to making sure that this year's MIG Journal is the best yet!
This year will mark the 41st year that students from around the state will convene in Springfield to explore careers in politics. This year, we will welcome over 250 students from 17 Illinois Colleges and Universities. As any veteran delegate will tell you, this experience will be one you remember forever!
As you prepare for this year's legislative simulation and moot court competition, we'd like to provide you with an overview of the Executive Board's activities over the course of the past year:
2018 Constitutional Convention
At simulation last year, delegates voted to host a Constitutional Convention to revisit all of MIG's 20-page constitution and consider what should be changed or updated. Representatives from eight delegations met three times during the course of the year to pore over every word and section of the constitution to see what could be improved. Six amendments were passed by delegates that enact minor changes, including implementing new language to define how the Executive Board should fill a vacancy when an officer is removed or steps down. The new constitution has been passed through three readings, and you will be voting on final passage on the first night of simulation. We'll provide more details soon.
Video, Photos, and Social Media
As Attorney General, I've directed my staff and journalists to be extra active in capturing all of the memorable moments that happen at simulation this year. This year, we want to be more active than ever in broadcasting our experience to others so we can grow the organization! We plan to hold several press conferences and other events live on our Facebook page, so make sure to follow us for updates throughout the weekend. Also, share your posts with the hashtag #MIG2019, and you could be featured!
New Speaker of the House Appointed
Some returning delegates from last year may have noticed that we have a new face on the Executive Board - Mackenzi Matthews from Lincoln Land Community College! Mackenzi joined the Board in December to fill in for our previous Speaker who stepped down for personal reasons. Mackenzi served as Assistant Majority Leader in the House last year. She has been a great addition to the team and is excited to get to work and serve the delegates of MIG!
Welcome Illinois Central College
We are excited to welcome Illinois Central College in East Peoria as our newest delegation at Model Illinois Government! When you see their delegates, be sure to welcome them and help them out as they get acquainted to the MIG experience.
That's all the updates we have for now - check back here on the MIG Journal often throughout the course of the weekend for more! And as always, feel free to contact me at attorneygeneral@modeilgov.org or any other member of the board with any questions.
Let's make it a great year, and welcome to Model Illinois Government!
